The Tormenting Of Jones, Short Film, Review And Interview

The terror ride Mr. Jones is one in which hits hard when you get to the end and discover the events have a basis in reality with a lot of discussions taking place. This is a horror story with a level of vengeance and a look at a futuristic view of criminal justice.

I saw The Tormenting of Jones at the 2019 FilmQuest film festival (website). It was nominated for Best Utah Short.

I recommend The Tormenting of Jones for those who are into horror with a side of vengeance and crime thriller.

Synopsis

Jones awakens over and over again in a nightmarish reality full of twisted creatures; each one feverishly bent on tearing him to pieces.

Chase Weston wrote and directed The Tormenting of Jones. Here he shared his inspiration for the movie and for becoming a filmmaker along with what he is working on and some of his likes.

What was the inspiration for The Tormenting of Jones?

I tend to see flashes of images, feelings and sounds while zoning out to music; and that's how a lot of my ideas come to me. I was meditating on some intense instrumental tracks when I saw this man in the woods crying and pleading with some unseen thing. I was drawn in by his terror. Then I heard the whooping calls, saw the whipping shadows and felt his fear. As my gaze lingered, more of the story revealed itself. I tried to include these flashes, or fades, in the film as they had come to mind initially.

As the story revealed itself, I picked up on themes like, "as above, so below" and "what we hold in our minds we create in our realities;" and I really tried to translate those themes through a lens of terror.

What project(s) do you have coming up that you're excited about?

I'm always working on a hundred things and keeping some aces up my sleeve. My next few projects are even bigger in scope, so another original is a ways away; but I'm hoping to meet some likeminded folks at Film Quest 2019 to maybe collaborate with.

I guess the next thing I'm focusing on for myself though is my sci-fi horror entitled Angel, which is a blend of thematics from X-Men, Alien and The Matrix.

What was your early inspiration for pursuing a career in film?

I've always loved movies. My dad and I would spend a lot of time going to the theater together or watching at home with the family. Movies always brought the family together and that's always just stuck with me. Bringing people together through film and media.

What would be your dream project?

I would love to work on a Predator movie. All my life it has been a shared favorite between my father and I. I even have the countdown sequence tattooed on my wrist. My parents and I spent years through my childhood building a Predator costume every Halloween that my dad would then wear around. He would pose with police officers wanting photos of him in hand cuffs and would win costume contests with it all the time. I even helped rig up lights in the helmet and a switch for the lasers that he could flip on and off which always got a good reaction. So, I've seen every Predator film about a hundred times or more. I even used to collect the comic books and novels.

Of all the cinema baddies, this extraterrestrial hunter is my absolute favorite. It even inspired the line in my film, The Tormenting of Jones, "What the f*** are you?!" and the final reveal of the creatures as they come out from the trees.

What are some of your favorite pastimes when not working on a movie?

Besides GOING to movies? I'm really into playing guitar and making music. I have about 60 songs and 4 albums I'm trying to get produced and released.

What is one of your favorite movies and why?

Aside from the aforementioned Predator films, I would definitely say JAWS. I saw this movie much too young and it literally scarred me for life. It was the first time I realized just how powerful cinema could be. I've studied this film through my life and many of the lessons I've learned I incorporate into almost everything film I'm a part of. I also have to watch this one at least once a year and whenever I start production/creative breakdown on one of my films.
